So you’ve been thinking of investing in hair extensions but aren’t sure what to expect? This blog will help you make an informed decision.

Hand Tied Hair Extensions can give you longer, thicker, more luxurious hair without looking like extensions. Even lazy days look good with a pretty easy maintenance routine, relatively speaking.

Here are some main key factors to consider before making a big investment on new hair.

IS THIS FOR LENGTH OR DENSITY, AND IS YOUR HAIR A CANDIDATE?

If you are looking to get length out of hair extensions, you should have your hair grown out to brush past your collar bone at the least for best results! It’s important to note, the longer you want your length, the more hair you may need in order to achieve believable results.

If it’s JUST for density, meaning you want your hair to feel thicker, you can get those results if you have long skinny hair, or hair as short as your jawline. But just remember, your hair grows, but your extensions won’t! Make sure you’re ok with the length for a long period of time.

You may not be a candidate for hand tied extensions if your hair is too thin in your crown area, meaning you can see through to your scalp, you may not be a candidate & should maybe consider a topper. Also, If your hair length is above your collarbone, it may be too short to blend into extensions giving it a jellyfish effect no one wants!

HOW LONG HAND TIED EXTENSION HAIR LASTS

Hand tied extension hair can have a wear time of 6-8+ months if well cared for. Sometimes a few wefts need to be replaced sooner. Know that it does get dry & split ends happen just like any hair, so it will need extra TLC in the form of good home care, hydration treatments & trims. But still, the hair length will “shrink” over time.

The wefts also can unravel, shed, &/or swell at the attachment points. Some of this is normal from wearing them after a while. If you are not brushing properly or letting them air dry, they will break down much faster.

I highly recommend replacing 2-3 wefts at a time every 3 move ups proactively. This also helps save spending a large chunk of money on all new hair. Rather replacing hair as you go so it always feels fresh!

YOUR COLOR

At Lifted we custom match your hand tied extensions to your desired hair color. Choose a color you know you will want to wear a while! BUT if you’re an adventurous person who loves to change it up, start lighter so we can continue to shift the extension color deeper. Or as I mentioned, you can replace some wefts to shift your color seasonally! Oftentimes we can shift your natural color without even changing your wefts! Just make sure to mention these things to your stylist before your appointment or during your consultation.

In short: We can NOT lighten your extension hair, but we can deepen or darken their color. BUT if you want to go lighter, you’ll need to purchase new wefts.

YOUR SALON MAINTENANCE

Hand Tied Extension move ups NEED to occur every 7-9 weeks depending on your hair type and follicle strength. During this session we completely remove your extensions & re-install them. You can seriously damage your hair &/or your extensions if you go too long between move up appointments.

They will also need the weft color re-touched periodically, as the original custom coloring will fade over time. If you also have hair color to maintain, you will want to consider the maintenance of that as well.

Your salon move up sessions can include your color maintenance, wash/treatment & style, ORif you’re in a hurry we can do a “quickie”, where you can come in clean/dry/detangled & we can pop ‘em out & reinstall them back in without any extra fluff or fuss!

YOUR HOME MAINTENANCE

We go into more details here, but to sum it up; Expect to add about an extra hour to your wash & blowout routine. While extensions make even the laziest hair look damn good, they need to be brushed out & detangled before you wash, after you wash, when you blow dry, & a couple times a the day!

**Hair hack* you can do what I call a hood wash to get a quick style & go by just washing the crown of your head & tying back your extensions.

YOUR PRODUCTS

Your product choices are essential to the longevity of your hair too! You must listen to your stylist recommendations on this one! Shampoo & conditioner must be sulfate & paraben free, stay away from “strengthening” or “protein” rich products, as they can break down your extension hair.

Basically, you want to keep them, hydrated, protected, detangled & dry. Sleep in braids or a high loose bun, & satin pillowcases are your friend!

YOUR INVESTMENT

For an initial installment, you have a two part investment: The hair & the service.

Hand Tied Extension hair is an investment ranging anywhere from $550 to $2,000+ depending on the length of your wefts & how many you need.

The service part can vary greatly depending on your stylist’s rates & the time it takes them, how much hair you need to add for your desired results, AND if you have a low, or high maintenance hair color, or if you want a whole new color shift.

That’s a part of your investment too that can vary with your color, but honestly, the extensions help to make hair color maintenance low & down to just focal points.

At Lifted we do inclusive sessions & feel pretty polyamorous about our clients, so if you want to split up your sessions with a collaboration between a colorist & extension artist, you totally can! Or maybe you can’t sit that long & need to separate color & move ups!

YOUR OPTIONS

One of the reasons I LOVE Hand Tied Extensions as an artist is because there’s so many options for customization! You can start with two rows & go down to one once your hair grows longer. Or maybe it’s just summer & you want a break. You can start with 1 row & add more hair to go longer (within reason). If you’re someone who likes to shift their color you can often do that too in the ways we explained above with your color.
